Abstract虽然面孔与生物运动在物理刺激的视觉表征上非常不同,但是两者都能表达人类的一些重要生物特征,性别是其中一种比较典型的生物特征。前人的研究表明面孔性别与生物运动性别各自均能发生视觉适应效应(visual adaptation effect),在一定的程度上暗示其各自的性别表征的特异性 (Webster et al., 2004; Jordan et al., 2006; Troje et al., 2006)。在这个研究中我们采用心理物理学的实验范式结合功能核磁共振脑成像的方法试图研究面孔与生物运动是否具有共同的性别表征。除性别信息外,面孔的朝向信息与生物运动的行走朝向信息都是典型的社会注意线索(social attention cue),两者均可以用于社会交往中推断他人的行动目的以及意图。因此,在本研究中,除了探讨面孔与生物运动是否具有共同性别表征,我们还研究面孔朝向信息与生物运动行走方向信息是否具有共同视觉表征。主要得到以下的研究结果:(1) 研究一发现面孔与生物运动的性别信息知觉可以发生跨类别适应。此外,我们利用功能核磁共振脑成像的手段发现这种适应现象可能是源于颞上沟对性别信息敏感的神经元所发生的适应。(2) 研究二发现面孔和生物运动的性别信息知觉不仅可以发生刺激类别内的同时对比效应,而且可以产生刺激类别间的同时对比效应。(3) 研究三发现面孔朝向与生物运动行走方向之间可以发生跨类别适应效应。综上所述,本研究发现面孔和生物运动之间存在共享的性别表征。不仅如此,对于生物体朝向信息,面孔与生物运动之间也存在共享的视觉表征。这种跨刺激类别的研究在一定程度上扩展了已有的面孔空间理论,暗示存在一个更广泛意义上的“生物空间”的可能。此外,这项研究也可以帮助我们加深对于物体的视觉表征机制的理解。
Other AbstractAlthough drastically different in visual features, faces and point-light biological motions both convey important properties of human beings, such as gender. Gender seems specifically represented in either face or biological motion perception, as demonstrated by gender adaptation in these two types of stimuli (Webster et al., 2004; Jordan et al., 2006; Troje et al., 2006). In the current study, we investigated whether there is a common gender representation between face and biological motion stimuli. In addition to gender, face viewpoint and biological motion walking direction are also important social attention cues to infer human goals and intentions. This study also investigated whether there is a shared visual representation between face viewpoint and biological motion walking direction.Three experiments were employed to address these questions.1. A robust cross-category gender aftereffect was observed between face and biological motion, which was associated with a significant fMRI adaptation effect in the right posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS).2. Significant simultaneous gender contrast effects were found for face, biological motion, and between face and biological motion stimuli.3. A cross-category aftereffect was also found between face viewpoint and biological motion walking direction.In conclusion, the current study provides compelling evidence that face and biological motion stimuli share a common gender representation in the human visual system, with the right pSTS being the candidate neural substrate. Moreover, face viewpoint and biological motion waling direction might also share common tuned channels. These findings shed new light on the “face space” theory, and suggest the that there might exist a common representational space for biological stimuli.
