The adolescent externalizing behavior problem has the negative impact on society, family and adolescents themselves. Therefore, it is an important topic for the adolescent development research. As the two important influential factors of adolescent externalizing behavior problem, parent hostility and parenting have been paid much attention in the last decades. In studies of exploring the relationship of the three variables, some researches found that the mothers` harsh discipline practices were the mediator in the association between mother’s hostility and adolescent externalizing behavior problem. However, the positive parenting has not been examined in previous studies. Most existing studies focus only on mothers. More attention needs to be paid to fathers. Moreover, it is not clear that whether the mediating effect of parenting that was found in children samples could be detected in adolescent sample. In the present study, researcher used the cross-sectional data of 4474 adolescent aged 10-21 of the National Survey of Adolescent Mental Health in China (2008) to investigate the relationship of parent hostility, parenting and adolescent externalizing problems.. Adolescents reported their externalizing problems and parents’ parenting. Parents reported their hostile behaviors. The main findings are as follows: Parent hostility significantly correlated with parenting; both parent hostility and parenting were significantly associated with adolescent externalizing problems; Parental monitoring, inductive reasoning and harshness partially mediated the relations between parent hostility and adolescent externalizing problems. Just like maternal parenting, paternal parenting played an important role in adolescent externalizing behavior problems. The above results supported a conclusion that parenting had a mediating effect on the association between parent hostility and adolescent externalizing behavior problems.
