To survey the status of personality traits , the stress and mental health status of coal miners. Methods :The survey was conducted in 11 mines of a coal mining corporate group. By means of stratified random sampling ,1 454 workers(844 coal miners and 610 ordinary workers) were polled to complete the Social Stressor Questionnaire , the NEO Five - Factor Inventory (NEO - FFI) , the Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL - 90) and the General Health Questionnaire ( GHQ) . Results :The coalminers scored higher in Neuroticism , lower in both Agreeableness and Conscientiousness than the ordinary workers ;and the meanGHQ score of the miners was lower , although their overall and job - factor stress were significantly higher than those of the ordinary workers. Conclusion : The occupation group of coal miners was significantly different from the group of ordinary workers in aspects of personality and stress.
