Abstract | In the current study, a flanker task was used to explore whether the resolution of cognitive conflict is gated by top-down attention using event-related potentials. Task-relevant and task-irrelevant processing were evoked using flanker stimuli that were either congruent or incongruent with the target. The results found that both N200 and P300 amplitude differences for color were enhanced only during task-relevant conflict, as was gender-conflict processing, indicating that cognitive conflict processing is under the control of top-down attention. Attention to the relevant conflict stimulus increases the processing of that particular attribute and unwanted information will be filtered out. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. |
