NoteThrough a simulated process-monitoring task with reaction time , mental workload and situation awareness as indices , this study investigated the applicability of data-ink ratio in the design of graphs to the design of dynamic graphic displays. 24 college students attending the pilot selection were tested. The result indicated that, for the low data-ink ratio condition, the response time was much shorter , and the score for situation awareness was higher. With regard to the design of displays for complex process-monitoring tasks, increasing appropriately the amount of ink that can depict the relation between data points, despite the possibility of lowering the data-ink ratio, could be conductive to attaining better monitoring performance. The result indicates that a simple translation of the guidelines from a static to dynamic environment is not a guarantee for improved performance. It is necessary to test their applicability when they are applied to dynamic displays.
