The current project aims to investigate the processing of local biological motion in the human brain using a combination of psychophysical and fMRI techniques. A series of experiments are proposed to address the following questions: 1) the automatic processing of local biological motion independent of global configuration 2)the attentional cueing effect of local biological motion in social interaction, and 3) the neural correlates of local biological motion processing. The findings from the current project will make two valuable contributions to the field of biological motion research. On the one hand, it confirms the role of local motion signals in biological motion perception. On the other hand, by disentangling biological significance from other confounding factors including the familiarity effect, it will substantially add to our understandings of the automatic processing of biological signals in the human visual system.
