Chinese language is a logographic writing system without graphem-to-phoneme correspondence, and these are many characteristics in Chinese character naming. The researches of this program focused on the phonological accessing of Chinese phonetic-semantic compounds, and investigated how the target character naming was influenced by its neighbors with the same phonetic radical. The results from behavioral study showed a facilitatory effect of neighborhood size for the without-higher-frequency-neighbor characters, but when there are higher-frequency neighbors, the phonology of the them would inhibited the phonological accessing of the target. The following fMRI study supported this result partially. The relevant developmental studies has been finished, and a developmental pattern of Chinese characer neighborhood effect was described by both behavioral and fMRI studies. Specially, for the children from grade 3 and 5, prominent activation on left middle frontal gyrus for small N size characters than for large N characters was found; and the results from the children of grade 7 revealed significantly more activation on left inferior frontal gyrus, left fusiform gyrus and right occipital gyrus for characters with large N than for characters with small N.
