Empathy, as an important basis for individuals to establish and maintain positive social relationships, is an important research topic in the domain of social cognition. Although previous studies have shown the effect of group bias on empathy, further systematic investigation of such effect is of essential scientific and practical significance. In the present project, we will comprehensively investigate different group identity effects (minimum simple group, fans group and self-resembling others) on empathy in different domains (e.g., physical pain empathy, the win/loss empathy and social rejection empathy). We will combine ERP and fMRI technology on the basis of behavioral research to explore the neural mechanism of the group bias empathy with the aim to more effectively predict individual’s social behaviors. Specifically, we will establish the cognitive mechanism of in-group and out-group empathy, so as to serve as foundation for follow-up research on domestic inter-group relationship, inter-group conflict resolution and the brain network of empathy. The applicant’s research field during Masters and PhD (i.e., social cognitive neuroscience) , the pilot study result, and the good research platform, together guarantee the completion of this project.
