How unity of vision is achieved by binocular combination is a fundamental question in visual perception, computer vision and neuroscience. Binocular combination studies usually examined how the brain combines two monocular inputs in an isolated fashion in terms of information dimension, task performance level, and relations to other binocular functions. Aiming to conquer these problems, the present project will develop a new paradigm to co-measure the brightness, contrast, and phase of the cyclopean image, systematically measure the rules and characteristics of binocular combination of multi-dimensional information, establish a relatively complete model about binocular combination and binocular vision, and explore the potential of perceptual learning and trans-cranial electrical stimulation in modulation of binocular information integration and sensory eye balance. Relative data and model will greatly advance the understanding of binocular combination, stereo vision, functional balance between the two eyes, and brain plasticity.
