Meaning in life (MIL) is of irreplaceable significance to the quality of life and the development of individuals. The creation and use of logotherapy and the extensive research on MIL as a psychological topic for more than half a century showed that MIL could make individuals better understand the state of their life and help them to find out the value of their existence, therefore, MIL would inspire individuals to creatively find their way out their plight or misfortune and achieve self-transcendence. In view of this, the researches on MIL by domestic and external scholars are in the ascendant. The domestic researchers mostly paid attention to the influence of MIL on individual physiology and psychology, but seldom studied the source and predictors of MIL, especially the influence of daily life practice on MIL which is of great value for treating the sense of unmeaning of life and finding the sense of MIL. Therefore, this study looked at the use of social network site which is closely related to our lives and explored whether active use of social network sites (AUSNS) could affect MIL, what exactly the influence was and how did it happen. A survey research was conducted in some universities with the scales of AUSNS, presence of MIL, positive affects (PA) and social comparison (SC) as well as self-concept clarity (SCC) through which 1018 qualified questionnaires were gathered. The results showed that (1) AUSNS positively predicted MIL; (2) PA and SC had a significant mediating effect between AUSNS and MIL; (3) SCC moderated not only the effects of AUSNS on PA and SC, but also the effect of PA and SC on MIL; (4) SCC moderated the mediating effect of PA and SC between AUSNS and MIL. AUSNS could not only directly predict MIL, but also could affect MIL through the mediating effects of PA and SC. The results may provide a reference for the further study in the use of social network sites and MIL, and also provide some inspiration for related psychological counseling or psychotherapy.
