Grit is a person's persistent enthusiasm for long-term goals and unremitting efforts. It is considered to be a positive psychological quality that is very important for individual's mental health and life development. Grit can help teenagers maintain mental health, overcome difficulties and adversity, and reduce the occurrence of mental diseases.In the past, the research on grit mostly focused on the relationship between grit and academic achievement and competition performance, but seldom discussed the formation and development of grit.This study aims to explore the formation and development mechanism of grit and how these factors interact from the perspectives of intergenerational transmission, family structure, parenting style and attributional style.Cross-sectional study was conducted by questionnaire in the present study. This study is divided into two parts. The study 1, the data of 302 junior high school students (The average age is 13.1 years;Male 141, female 161) in grade 1 and 2 from three middle schools in Beijing and their parents were investigated by the research tools including the Grit-Scale and Parental Bonding Instrument(PBI). After the data matching, from the perspective of intergenerational transmission, the study investigated the relationship between parents’grit and offsprings’grit and explored the mediation effect of parenting. The results found:(1)Parents’grit and the two factors “consistency of interests” and “perseverance of effort”significantly and positively correlate with the offsprings’.The intergenerational transmission of grit exists(βfather=0.27, p<0.001;βmother=0.28, p<0.001).(2)Paternal and Maternal care play a part of mediating role between parents’grit and offsprings’grit.The Study 2, further explored the formation mechanism of grit, the data of 739 junior high school students (The average age is 13.5 years;Male 378, female 361) in grade 1,2 and 3 of five middle schools in Beijing, Tianjin and Shijiazhuang were investigated by the research tools including Grit-Scale, Parental Bonding Instrument(PBI) and Internal-External Locus of control Scale(IES). This study explored and examined the mediation effect of focus of control between parenting style and grit. The results found:(1)Parenting style significantly correlates with the grit of junior school students, parental care positively correlates with junior school students' grit and all dimensions, parental control negatively correlates with junior school students' grit and all dimensions.(2)The focus of control partially plays a mediating role between parenting style and grit of junior school students.The research conclusions were as follows: The intergenerational transmission of grit existes and parental care plays a part of mediating role in the generation - to - generation transmission of grit; The focus of control partially plays a mediating role between parenting style and grit of junior school studentsFrom the perspective of intergenerational transmission, this study explored the formation and development mechanism of adolescent grit, which was innovative and got meaningful conclusions.It took the study of grit one step further and provided the reference of culturing and promoting the grit of adolescents for family, school and society. The study has theoretical and practical significance.
