Research significance :(1) to provide scientific data for objectively understanding the core competency level of local obstetrics nurses through a cross-sectional survey. (2) Through the discussion of the relationship between the core competency of obstetrical nurses and nurses' age, working years, education background and professional title, it provides a basis for the precise training of obstetrical nurses' competency based on different ages, working years, education background and professional title.(3) Through the study of the relationship between personality traits and core competency of obstetric nurses, it provides reference for the shaping of corresponding personality traits in the cultivation of core competency of obstetric nurses. (4) Further explore the competency characteristics of obstetric nurses through semi-structured interviews with nurses with high core competency scores, so as to provide a deeper understanding of the research on core competency of obstetric nurses.
Methods:
Study 1:Using purpose sampling,260 obstetric nurses from 3 maternal and child institutions in Wuxi, China were recruited as research participants. A study specific questionnaire was used to collect information on age, education, professional title, years of specialty among obstetric nurses. The core competence of obstetric nurses was assessed by Competency Inventory for Registered Nurse(CIRN).The personality traits of obstetric nurses were analyzed by the Cartel 16 personality factor test (Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire, 16PF). The associations between age, education, professional title, specialty, and their core competence were examined using correlation Descriptive statistics, Independent sample T test, Oneway ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and Multiple linear regression.
Study 2: Using phenomenological research methods and using study 1 as the target population, stratified sampling was carried out according to age to conduct semi- structured interviews with 13 obstetrics nurses with top scores of nurses' core competence. Systematic text extraction method was adopted to refine the subject of interview data.
The results show that:
(1) Based on the core energy scale (CIRl}, the average(士standard deviation) total score for obstetric core competence was 157.37士29.44. The domain specific scores (mean士SD) are as follows: critical thinking (24.6士5.47), clinical care (23.67士4.68), leadership (26.79士6.20), human relationship (22.62士5.11), legal and ethics practice (24.23士5.11), professional development (16.45士3.98), and education consulting (19.01士4.77).
(2) The association between obstetric nurse degree and core title was not significant (p <0.05), while age, specialty years were significantly associated with the core competence among obstetric nurse (p <0.05). The results show that the core competence of obstetric nurses is stronger with the increase of age and specialty years.
(3) Among the personality traits, excitability (F), independence (Q2) and self-discipline (Q3) had significant positive predictive effects on core competence of obstetrical nurses (P <0.05);Boldness (H), independence (Q2) and excitability (F) had positive predictive effects on critical thinking ability dimensions of core competence of obstetric nurses (P <0.05);Personality factors of constancy (G), independence (Q2) and self-discipline (Q3) positively predicted the dimensions of leadership (P <0.05);The personality factors of pleasure group (A) and excitability (F) positively predicted the interpersonal competence (P <0.05);Stability (C) Personality factor positively predicted the dimension of nurses' legal and ethical practice ability (P <0.05);Intelligence (B) and stability (C) personality factors had positive predictive effects on nurses' education and consulting ability (P <0.05).
(4)The competency characteristics of obstetrical nurses include positive professional experience, ability characteristics and personality traits, which are composed of 10 components.
Conclusion:
(1) The total core competency score and the score of each dimension of obstetric nurses show that leadership ability is more prominent, while professional development needs to be improved.
(2) Nurses' age and specialty years were positively associated with their core competence, suggesting the importance of continuous training and improvement in order to improve the core competence.
(3) There is a certain correlation between core competence and personality traits of obstetrical nurses. Attention should be paid to the shaping of corresponding personality traits in the training process of core competence and various dimensions of ability of obstetrical nurses.
(4) The inner positive professional experience of obstetrics nurses is the internal source of competence self-affirmation, and the mutual influence of their abilities and personality traits promotes the development of obstetrics nurses' competence. It is necessary to pay attention to the construction of hospital's humanistic spirit connotation and the creation of humanistic environment. The study of obstetrical nurse competency should have both capability characteristics and personality. |
