Overwork is a common problem in the Asia-Pacific region. Since the 21 st century, China's economy has developed rapidly, and people's working and living standards have been continuously improved. However, the social competition pressure is also increasing. Some of the workers are in a state for long working hours, resulting in physical or mental health suffered serious damage, and even karoshi, death from overwork. A series of physical and psychological problems brought by overwork have begun to attract wide attention of Chinese researchers, but the relevant research in China is still in the initial stage, and the consequences of overwork are rarely discussed from the perspective of resignation intention. At the same time, resignation from the company and change the career are two different departure destination of the turnover, however the related research is relatively lack, especially the physical health risk perception and mental health risk perception caused resignation and career change which is very important for understanding how overwork impact on employee's physical and mental health risk perception and also their coping behavior. Therefore, this study focuses on the problem of workplace overwork which is urgently needed for getting more attention from employees, employers and management units, and discusses the function mechanism of overwork on employee's resignation from the company and career change. A survey research reached 584 employees and it was conducted with the overwork rating scale, turnover intention scale, health risk perception scale, organizational trust scale and health awareness scale. 517 qualified questionnaires were collected.
The results of this study show that: (1) the overwork status of employees significantly positively predicts their intention for resigning from the company and career change. (2) The mental health risk perception had a significant mediating effect between overwork and employee's intention for resigning from the company and career change. The physical health risk perception had a significant mediating effect between overwork and employee's intention for resigning from the company, but not that between overwork and employee's intention for career change. (3) Health awareness positively moderated the mediating effect between health risk perception and employee's intention for resigning from the company, enhanced the mediating effect of physical health risk perception between overwork and employee's intention for resigning from the company. This study enriches the research on the overwork and employee's intention for resigning from the company and career change from the health risk perception and the result reveals that the overwork status has become more serious than few years ago and needs more attention and improvement. The employer and industrial management association should improve the overwork status, protect the occupational health rights and interests of employee.
