The positive adolescent development theory holds that every teenager has leadership qualities and potential leadership skills. Teenagers is not only an important stage of individual leadership development, The parenting style, parental relations and values in the family environment will have a profound impact on the growth of teenagers. Previous research results show that parenting style can be divided into emotional warmth, rejection, over-protection, and preference. This study mainly investigates the correlation of parents 'emotional warmth, a crucial dimension of parenting style, and the development of adolescent leadership, and examines how the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs of adolescents can promote or hinder the development of adolescent leadership level by parents' emotional warmth.
By sending paper questionnaires to 582 students in a middle school in Yunnan province to evaluate their parenting style and their basic psychological needs, and to evaluate their leadership skills, a total of valid data of 546 students were obtained.
The results show that both father and mother's emotional warmth was positively related to adolescent leadership, and parents' satisfaction of adolescent competence need mediated this relationship, however, parents' satisfaction of adolescent relatedness and autonomy needs did not playa mediating role. This demonstrated that parents' emotional warmth mainly promotes adolescent leadership by satisfying their competence needs.
This study examines the relationship between parents' emotional warmth and adolescent leadership, and reveals the underlying mechanism from the self-determination theory. Thus, our research has theoretical significance. At the same time, according to the results, this study puts forward targeted suggestions for the cultivation of adolescent leadership, which also has implications for social practice guidance.
