Abstract | Researchers have reported that observers are faster at judging the position of convex vertices than concave ones (Perception 30 (2001) 1295), and a reversal of the relative speeds were found when the same contours were presented as holes instead of objects using a figural manipulation of figure/ground (Cognition 87 (2003) 33). 2 experiments with revised paradigm were conducted to further study the relationship between polarity and direction of vertex in judging positions of vertex of holes. Results showed that the direction of vertex affected participants' performances. Related issues on perception of shape of objects and holes were also discussed. |
