AbstractAlthough unsupportive social interactions have demonstrated detriment on mental health, the possible mediation of internal resources remains unclear. This study set out to investigate, within the theoretical framework of stress, whether coping style and perceived control can influence mental health when laid-off workers perceived unsupportive behaviors from family, friends, and society. As prediction, findings revealed that increasing remorse coping and abreaction coping, as well as decreasing interpersonal perceived control, mediated between unsupportive social interactions and mental disorder. Implications for understanding the stress process underlying laid-off workers’ mental health problems and for developing preventive intervention are discussed.
