Abstract | It is widely believed that insight critically contained the process of mental set broken. The neural correlates of insight occurring in puzzle solving were investigated by event-related potentials (ERPs). Through uncovering the solutions of the unresolved riddles to participants, we induced their feeling of insight. N380 associated with this process, and the generator of it was localized in anterior cingulated cortex (ACC). The result is consisted with our previous event-related fMRI studies that showed insight was associated with activities in ACC and other frontal areas. These observations proved the component of cognitive conflict in breaking mental set. |
