Keyword
Other AbstractThe aim of this study is longitudinally designed to make clear of the direction of the relationship between Weibo usage and depressed mood, while to explore the influence of Spring Festival on the relationship between Weibo usage and depressed mood. Gender  difference is examined based on the assurance of the causality. It is studied the impact of rumination, co-rumination, extraversion and emotional stability on the association between Weibo usage and depressed mood. The data is collected through Weibo and  its API. All the participants is followed once a month during 6 months. Cross-lagged analysis and hierarchical linear model are used to process
longitudinal data.
The results are as followed: 1) Weibo negative posting is positively predicted by depressed mood. 2) Weibo negative posting is uprising gradually before the Spring Festival month whereas decreasing after the month. Depressed mood predicts Weibo negative posting with the time, which shows the strength of the direction of depressed mood and Weibo negative posting. 3) Gender differences is found between Weibo negative posting, positive interpersonal experience and negative interpersonal experience. Firstly, depressed mood can only significantly predict Weibo negative posting in the female participants. Secondly, there is a stable association between depressed mood and negative interpersonal experience in the female participants while a stable association between depressed mood and positive interpersonal experience. 4) For females in our sample, rumination partially mediates the association between depressed mood and Weibo negative posting. 5) Emotional stability could positively moderate the relationship between the depressed mood and Weibo negative posting for females in our sample.
In conclusion, the direction of the association between depressed mood and negative posting is explored through cross-lagged analysis and HLM, which is the higher the depressed mood, the more negative posting. This finding is much more significant for female than for male. Lastly, the impact of depressed mood on negative posting is partly influenced by rumination. And for the individual with lower emotional stability, the higher the depressed mood, the more negative posting. The findings of this study provide theoretical proof for other researches on the direction of the association between Weibo usage and depressed mood and practical suggestions for function design of Weibo and other online social networking sites.
