In the era of "everything can be socialized", browsing the wonderful experiences of friends through social networking websites has become a way of life of modern people. Social networking sites not only facilitate people to expand social relations and obtain external information, but also produce a series of negative effects. In recent years, researchers have focused on one of the negative effects: Fear of Missing Out.
Fear of missing out (FoMO) refers to diffuse anxiety caused by fear of missing other people's novel experiences or some possible important information. The impact of FoMO on individuals has attracted the attention of many researchers. Previous studies have found that FoMO can reduce the subjective well-being of individuals, enhance the sense of stress, lead to depression and induce cognitive failure. Exploring the causes of FoMO will be beneficial to better intervention of FoMO. In previous studies, researchers mostly studied FoMO from individual factors such as personality, loneliness and self-esteem, and rarely studied the relationship between family and FoMO from the perspective of micro system. At present, there is no research to explore the relationship between family function and FoMO. As a group of college students who have just left their families, does family function have an impact on the FoMO of college students? What is the impact mechanism? Paying attention to the relationship between family function and FoMO of college students is not only a deepening and supplement to the research on FoMO, but also provides a new perspective for the exploration of the causes of FoMO. In this study, 409 college students from five universities in Guangdong Province investigated by using Family Assessment Device (FAD), Relatedness Need-Satisfaction and Frustration Scale, Self-Control Scale (SCS), short version of Social Network Sites Addictive Tendencies Scale, and Fear of Missing Out Scale. The results indicated: (1) Family function was positively correlated with self-control, negatively correlated with relatedness need-frustration, social networking sites addiction and FoMO; Relatedness need-frustration was positively correlated with social networking sites addiction and FoMO; Self-control was negatively correlated with social networking sites addiction and FoMO; Social networking sites addiction was positively correlated with FoMO. (2) Family function could negatively predict FoMO. (3) There are five indirect paths between family function and FoMO: the single mediation effect of relatedness need-frustration, the single mediation effect of self-control, the single mediation effect of social networking sites addiction, the chain mediation effect of relatedness need-frustration and social networking sites addiction the chain mediation effect of self-control and social networking sites addiction. Conclusion: Relatedness need-frustration and social networking sites addiction exert a chain mediating effect on the relationship between family function and FoMO, self-control and social networking sites addiction exert a chain mediating effect on the relationship between family function and FoMO of college students.
